A Gulf work visa (also called an employment or work-permit visa) lets you live and work legally in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman or Bahrain. Unlike a visit visa, it is sponsored by your employer and tied to a real job. Here is the exact journey — and where a registered consultancy fits in.
Step 1 — Secure a genuine job offer
Everything starts with a confirmed job. Once you clear the interview (usually a video or working-video call), the employer issues an offer letter or demand letter stating your role, salary, working hours, contract duration and benefits. Read it carefully before signing — this document is the basis of your visa.
Step 2 — Employer applies for the work permit
The employer (or their local PRO) applies to the labour ministry in the destination country for a work permit / block visa. For countries on India's eMigrate system, the employer and recruiting agent must be registered. This stage happens abroad and is handled by the employer — you simply wait for approval.
Step 3 — Prepare and attest your documents
While the permit is processed, you get your paperwork ready:
- Valid passport (at least 6 months validity, ECR/ECNR as applicable)
- Educational & trade certificates — often needing attestation / apostille
- Experience certificates and an updated resume
- Passport-size photos to the country's photo specification
Tip: Skilled roles (welder, electrician, nurse, technician) usually need the trade or education certificate attested by the MEA and the destination country's embassy. Start this early — attestation is the most common cause of delay.
Step 4 — Pass the GAMCA / Wafid medical
Most Gulf countries require a pre-departure medical fitness test at an approved GAMCA (Wafid) centre. It checks for communicable diseases and general fitness. You must be declared "Fit" before the visa is stamped, so book it as soon as your documents are ready.
Step 5 — Visa stamping & biometrics
Once the work permit is approved and your medical is clear, your passport goes for visa stamping at the destination country's visa centre in India. Some countries also capture biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at this stage. After stamping, you receive your passport back with the work visa.
Step 6 — Emigration clearance & flight
If you hold an ECR passport and are travelling to an ECR-notified country for work, you need Emigration Clearance (ECR / "POE") through the eMigrate portal before you fly. A registered recruiting agent files this for you. After clearance, your flight ticket is booked and you travel to start work. Learn more in our guide on ECR vs ECNR passports.
How long does a Gulf work visa take?
Realistically, 4 to 10 weeks from a confirmed offer to travel, depending on the country, the employer's speed and how quickly your attestation and medical are completed. Keeping your documents ready in advance is the single biggest thing you can do to move faster.
Who pays for the work visa?
For most genuine Gulf employment offers, the employer bears the work-permit and visa cost. You should be cautious of anyone asking for large "visa fees" upfront. A registered consultancy like Shifa Manpower never charges candidates for interviews and explains every cost clearly before you commit.
